Bathrooms and floors made of microcement are becoming increasingly popular. An attractive microcement floor can be maintained for many years with proper varnish application. If a surface is not properly varnished, it will absorb a lot of water and other dust easily. Therefore, we will discuss which type of varnish should our client choose for protection.

When applying varnish to Microcement walls, aesthetics should be taken into account; matt-finish varnishes work well in this situation. They make the surface appear more like natural, reduce glare, and reflect less light. CEMHER® AQUAMAX PRO is a two-component water based polyurethane coating, (50% solid content) with a deep matte finish that works great on balancing the matte natural, chemical resistance and hardness performance. It has the new WMA technology (without matting agents). This technology is characterized by the absence of matting agents in the satin and matt finishes, this makes its chemical and stain resistance excellent.
Very high resistance to scratching and chemical agents such as bleach, salfumán or vinegar. No absorption of wine, coffee or oil stains. It is 50% solids, providing greater filling capacity with more resistant finishes

When varnishing floors, special attention should be paid to the surface's resistance to chemicals and mechanical stresses. This is particularly important for applications in commercial area with high traffic (impact and abrasion resistance) and F&B, kitchens function microcement (chemical resistance).
A product that works great on floors is CEMHER® AQUAMAX PRO Floor, is a two-component water based polyurethane coating, with 50% solid content, which has a deep matte finish, ideal for natural effect.
CEMHER® AQUAPUR 70, with high solid content 65%, which has a matte finish, exceptionally hard impact resistance (UNI EN 6272-2), abrasion resistance (UNI EN 5470-2) and resistance to severe chemical attack (UNI EN 13529) is ideal for heavy duty use floor.

The floor & wall in the bedroom & living room, where there is little exposure to various types of dirt, should be treated differently from the varnish in the bathroom & kitchen. We strongly recommend using stronger & thicker varnish (generally more glossy products with high solid content) for wet areas (Kitchen & Bathroom), with better chemical and mechanical resistance.

A water-based sealer, like CEMHER® AQUAMAX PRO & CEMHER® AQUAPUR 70, disperses polymer particles in water. When the sealer is applied to Microcement, the water evaporates, and the polymer particles become closer together. As water evaporates, the polymer particles deform and fuse together, forming a continuous clear coating. After curing, water-based sealers tend to provide a lower-gloss, matte finish, like CEMHER AQUAPUR 70. Moreover, as water-based varnish contain water, whose molecules are very large, they will leave microscopic space, so they offer less chemical and stain resistance, than solvent-based varnish.

Solvent based varnish have much smaller molecules than water-based varnish and are therefore much more resistance to chemical and stains, as well as being very hard. Because of the solvent content, the solvent-based product emits vapors during application, making it difficult to apply in enclosed spaces and should only be used by professionals wearing additional personal protective equipment. After fully drying, the varnish no longer emits volatile substances and is completely safe with incompatible performance.

A solvent-based sealer, like CEMHER MAXIPUR, does not contain polymers as separate particles. Instead, the polymer and solvent combine to form a continuous, clear polymer solution. A solvent-based sealer's evaporating solvent draws the polymer chains closer together until they entangle. Solvent-based polyurethane sealers are able to leave a thicker, and therefore usually more protective (chemical and mechanical resistant) layer on the microcement. Furthermore, it usually has a greater penetration depth into dense Microcement. On the other hand, the surface will be shiny and “plastic”, and this affect the material and natural effect of the coating.
This explains why a sealed Microcement surface by high solid content (good quality) water-based varnish, e.g. CEMHER AQUAPUR 70 and solvent-based varnish, e.g. CEMHER MAXIPUR often appears “glossy matt” because they both produce thicker dry film thickness protective coat.

Aside from polyurethane sealer, we offer our clients another option: polyaspartic coating for areas that require high chemical resistance or Intensifies the color of microcement. Polyaspartic is a type of polyurea, and polyurea coating is an incredible material best known for its unsurpassed waterproofing abilities, extreme durability, and fast drying time.
CEMHER POLYSHIELD, is a two-component polyaspartic self-levelling aliphatic acrylic polyurethane resin. It has a high viscosity and a high solids content and therefore provides extreme filling and covering capacity against water. providing great film thickness, chemical resistance and very high hardness. Excellent resistance to UV rays, zero yellowing. Ideal for high traffic, humid areas and for exterior and interior use.
Although there are numerous benefits for polyaspartic sealers, however, some drawback must be addressed, such as:

Short pot-life, hard for non-professional use.

More expensive than PU flooring, budget considerations.

Slippery, when wet, polyaspartic flooring can become slippery. Additional measure is required for slip resistance.

High gloss, with the option of adding a coat of matt varnish to modify the finishes gloss level.
